On 19 February 2026, at the 2026 Center for Hydrogen Safety Europe Conference in Athens, Dr Stella Giannisi, Hydrogen Expert at the Alternative & Renewable Fuels Department of the General Strategy Division, and Vasileios Kazakos, Safety Engineer at the Health & Safety Department of Motor Oil (Hellas) Corinth Refineries S.A., presented hydrogen as a core pillar of our ambitious energy transition program to 2030.
At Motor Oil, “safety first” is not a slogan — it is our fundamental rule of operation. This principle is fully embedded in the way we design, develop and deploy hydrogen projects across our portfolio.
Our ambition is clear: Enable an East Med Hydrogen Hub through an integrated ecosystem, developing flexible, scalable and cost-advantaged infrastructure for Renewable and Ultra-Low Carbon Hydrogen across industry, energy and mobility.
Our hydrogen ecosystem — including:
🔹 A 50 MW electrolyzer (>5,000 tpa renewable hydrogen)
🔹 Compression & trailer loading terminal
🔹 Greece’s 1st Hydrogen Refueling Station in Agioi Theodoroi
🔹 Integration into refinery and transport applications
🔹 Internal H₂ pipeline network
— is being developed under rigorous safety governance and engineering excellence.
The electrolyzer, initially designed at 30 MW and upscaled to 50 MW, is co-funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership through the EPHYRA project and further supported by the Greek Recovery & Resilience Facility under the Green Hydrogen project, respectively — advancing circular economy principles and accelerating renewable hydrogen deployment.
The rest ecosystem extends from large-scale production to pilot end-use applications, under the TRIERES project, also co-funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
Safety comes always first and remains our foundation. Through focused safety assessments, like HAZID/HAZOP and QRA, we ensure hydrogen is scaled responsibly, safeguarding people and facilities, and fostering public trust, while accelerating decarbonization.
We thank the Center for Hydrogen Safety for fostering the dialogue on safe hydrogen deployment across Europe.
