The EPHYA project took the spotlight at a webinar hosted by Mission Innovation – the Net-Zero Industries Mission (NIM) and the Clean Hydrogen Mission, as part of the NIM Industry Insights Webinar Series, held in November 2024. The event attracted 180 participants from 10 countries, reinforcing the global momentum around hydrogen’s role in industrial decarbonisation.
The webinar focused on the importance of hydrogen in addressing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors, which account for roughly 25% of global GHG emissions. Greece’s contribution to this transformation was highlighted through the EPHYRA project.
Representing Motor Oil group, Dr. Stella Giannisi, Hydrogen Expert at the at Alternative & Renewable Fuels Department (General Directorate of Strategy), and Vasiliki Panaretou, Technical Expert at the EU Affairs Directorate presented the EPHYRA initiative – a flagship investment in a 30 MW electrolysis plant, now expandable to 50 MW thanks to additional support from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), integrated within Motor Oil’s refinery in Corinth.
Key points from the presentation included:
- The use of renewable hydrogen as a fuel or feedstock, enabling the production of low-carbon derivatives such as methanol;
- EPHYRA’s strategic role in decarbonising industrial operations and heavy transport;
- The project’s alignment with European climate goals and innovation pathways.
EPHYRA stands as a leading example of Greece’s green hydrogen strategy, reinforcing the country’s role in the global clean energy shift.
